Similarities Between Call Of The Wild And To Build A Fire

Jack London, a 20th century author, is famous for novel The Call of the Wild and short story To Build a Fire. The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, was originally published in 1903, but it is still being printed today. The novel tells the tale of Buck, and his transition from house dog to a sled dog who works in the Yukon Territory. On the other hand, To Build a Fire, also by Jack London, was published in 1908, and is about a man and his dog who are traveling in the Yukon alone. Because of amateur mistakes, the man ends up freezing to death. While Call of the Wild and To Build a Fire both share the same setting, and feature characters in similar situations, they are quite different in terms of the main character and the relationship†¦show more content†¦But the biggest mistake happened right after they left Buck with John Thornton. In chapter five of The Call of the Wild, it reads, â€Å"As Buck watched them, Thornton knelt beside him and with rough, kindly hands searched f or broken bones. By the time his search had disclosed nothing more than many bruises and a state of terrible starvations, the sled was a quarter of a mile away. Dog and man watched it crawling along over the ice. Suddenly, they saw its back end drop down, as into a rut, and the gee-pole, with Hal clinging to it, jerk into the air. Mercedes’s scream came to their ears. They saw Charles turn one step to run back, and then a whole sections of ice and dogs and humans disappear. A yawning hole was all that was to be seen. The bottom had dropped out of the trail† (London 91). Because of Hal, Charles, and Mercedes’s over confidence and lack of experience, they fell into the ice, a mistake which cost them their lives. If they had been more careful and had listened to Thornton’s advice of not crossing over that section, they wouldve still been alive. Much like the situation in The Call of the Wild, the man’s mistakes in To Build a Fire really cost him. In hi s case, the man had forgotten to build a fire and thaw out.
